Hi,
I have just brought a Japan version of the PSP by mistake for my son
for Christmas, I have just got it out of the box to find it has no
english instructions and the adaptor is different. Do you think my
son will have any problems with the PSP I have got or do you think I
should try and get a UK one. It has cost alot of money just to throw
it away.
My concern is that the games in the UK will play on my Japan PSP.

I have enjoyed my Japanese PSP since May this year and have not had any issues.
I didn't even look at the manual because the PSP has a very good and intuitive design. If you have any questions it is easy to get them answered in online forums.
The Japanese PSP supports English as system language and this is the most important fact. Even majority of Japanese games are in English.
Sony has always stated that games will NOT be region encoded. This means you should be able to play games from any country on any system. I have tested games purchased in UK, USA and Japan and they all worked. There is no guarantee however that Sony will not change their mind about this.
I have not tested any UMD movies but Japan is the same movie (DVD) region as UK (region 2) so my guess is that you can play both UK and Jap movies. I would not recommend UMD movies because they are VERY expensive and it is relatively easy to convert any video (DVD, TV, etc) to a Memory Stick for free.
My wife was sold a Japanese PSP in a high street shop in New York but I did not mind, I was actually happier with a second Japanese PSP.
The adapter supports 100-250V, 50/60Hz which means all over the world. You can purchase a short cable with UK plug on it that can be used with the adapter.
As an extra bonus it is rumoured that the Japanese PSP (1000K) is manufactured in Japan instead of China and is of higher quality. The screen is supposedly provided by a different manufacturer than the screen for US and UK models.

Thank you very much for the reply. I have taken the PSP into a Computer Shop today and they said exactly the same as yourself. I am just so pleased. They charged it up using the PS2 which we have a PS2 at home so it is OK. But they showed me the cable as well which I can buy.
He said it is very good quality, better then the UK ones, so I am extremely happy. All I need now is a better memory stick.

There are torrents "out there" with PSP games so yes it is possible. But the downloaded games will only work on modified (hacked) PSPs so you will void your warranty.
While the PSP games are expensive I find them very long lasting and I only buy one at a time. I think this together with the material you get with a game (booklet, the actual UMD) makes it well worth it!

I am buying one of these Jap gizmos today (I work in Akihabara) but don't like the cost of the games, hence the interest in download.

Funny, that is exactly the same price I got mine for back in March. I would have thought that the price should have dropped.The "Value" package (32MB card) costs 24,700 yen. The other package (with
1GB card) costs 30,000 yen. The second option is a good deal as you get a
speaker dock and some other goodies (check online for the full list).
Don't yet know the firmware version, as it's a Christmas pressy so I haven't
had it out of the box.
